Speaking up is one of the four pillars of effective teams, according to Harvard University’s Dr. Amy Edmondson. In this short video, Tom Carmazzi, CEO of Tuthill, discusses how his company uses 3×5 index cards to create space for speaking up among his employees.

Why is speaking up important? When we feel safe enough to share our deeper thoughts, we’re operating in space where innovation and growth can also exist. Speaking up is an outcome of psychological safety.

Beyond that, employees who speak up are taking ownership of the project, its ideas, and its future. Below, Carmazzi outlines his firm’s simple process for hearing from each person in the room.
