Appreciation signs for essential workersWhile many of America’s white-collar workforce has the luxury of working from their couches right now, the nation’s “essential workers” are still on the job, stocking shelves at grocery stores, driving trains and buses, and healing the sick in our hospitals.

KSB Hospital in Dixon, Illinois, is showing appreciation for its hard-working nurses, doctors, and staff. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the system CEO Dave Schreiner wrote an editorial titled “Heroes don’t always wear capes.”

The phrase caught on, and soon signs appeared throughout the hospital’s campuses. “Heroes work here,” the signs declared. Now, people are taking selfies with the signs and posting them on social media.

That’s not the only way KSB Hospital is showing appreciation. Each day at 3:16 pm, the hospital’s intercom system makes an announcement:

Please join our KSB Hospital Team in a moment of silence and reflection for our healthcare team, our patients and residents, our community, and all healthcare workers and patients everywhere that have been impacted by COVID-19.

Then the announcer pauses for one-minute, then ends the time of reflection by saying “thank you.”
